The 2026 Insurance Market Has Shifted. Here Is What Austin Businesses Need to Know.

By May 14, 2026No Comments

The commercial insurance market looks different in 2026 than it did two years ago. Rates are more predictable. Carrier competition is returning. The emergency decision-making that defined 2023 and 2024 is easing.

That’s the good news.

The question every Texas business owner should be asking right now is whether their current insurance program reflects where their company actually is today, not where it was when they last renewed without asking questions.

Watkins Insurance Group CEO Patrick Watkins addressed that question directly in a recent Austin Business Journal feature on what the 2026 commercial insurance market means for Texas businesses. The piece covers what drove the market correction, where specific lines are heading into 2027, and why a stable market still requires attention, particularly for businesses carrying coverage gaps created during the hard market years.

Three things worth knowing before your next renewal:

  • Stability is real, but it isn’t permanent. The industry posted its strongest underwriting performance in a decade in 2025. Carriers want to grow market share. That competition creates better terms and more reasonable pricing. Use the window.

  • Deductible exposure is real money. Higher deductibles shifted meaningful risk back to policyholders over the past several years. If you haven’t reviewed what you’re actually responsible for in a claim, now is the time.

  • AI liability is moving faster than most businesses realize. Major commercial insurers are already filing to restrict AI-related claims from standard policies. Most mid-market businesses haven’t reviewed whether their current program covers what their technology does on their behalf.
