Why You Need to Schedule Your Barn on Your Farm Insurance Policy

If you’re a farm or ranch owner, you know that your property is much more than your home. There are a lot of other buildings and structures on your property that play an essential role in your farm and ranch activities. Did you know that your farm insurance policy does not automatically cover those buildings and structures? That’s right—barns, shops, and other outbuildings are not considered “other structures” under most farm insurance policies. To have coverage for those types of buildings, you need to schedule them on your policy specifically.

Why Other Structures Aren’t Covered Automatically

Other structures like detached garages, guest houses, pool houses, or casitas are typically used to support the primary residence. Because of that, they are considered an “other structure” and are automatically covered by most farm insurance policies up to the limit specified on the policy for “other structures” coverage. However, barns, shops, and other utility buildings that support farming or ranching activities like livestock or equine shelter, hay storage, or storage of farm/ranch equipment and implements like tractors are not considered “other structures.”

To have coverage for those types of buildings, you need to schedule them on your policy specifically. By scheduling your farm and ranch buildings, you’ll be certain you have the coverage you want and need if the worst were to happen and you need to file a claim.

How to Schedule Your Buildings

Scheduling your buildings is easy—just call your insurance agent, and they will take care of everything for you. First, they will ask you for basic information about each building, such as the type or function of the building, when it was built, the condition its currently in, and what type of roof it has. Once they have that information, they will be able to provide you with a quote for the coverage you need.

Don’t wait until it’s too late to find out that your farm insurance policy doesn’t cover your barn—schedule it today! It’s easy to do and will give you peace of mind knowing that you’re adequately protected in case something happens.
